“Thomas Nelson Community College students Jasmane Ormond, Pascal Shukuru and Brett Walker have earned state recognition for outstanding scholarly achievement. The trio was named to the 2016 PTK All-Virginia Academic Team and honored along with peers during an awards luncheon on April 20 in Richmond. Additionally, Ormond was selected as a Gold Scholar for Coca-Cola’s 2016 Community College Academic Team and named to the 2016 PTK Top 10 All-Virginia Academic Team for which she received $500.
About the students
Ormond was chosen as a Gold Scholar from among approximately 1,900 applicants based on her score in the All-USA Community College Academic Team competition. As one of the 50 Gold Scholars selected, Ormond received a gold medallion and a $1,500 scholarship. She was recognized by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society during an annual convention April 7-9 in National Harbor, Md. This program is administered by PTK and sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “My achievements are impressive, but the effort is hard. This past year has been the toughest year yet for me, and if anything this honor reminds me of why I started this process and to keep striving for excellence,” Ormond said.
Ormond enrolled at Thomas Nelson in 2013 having graduated from high school seven years earlier. With a cumulative grade point average of 3.897, she is President of Thomas Nelson’s Student Government Association, an International Club member and co-enrolled at William & Mary. In late January, Ormond represented Thomas Nelson on Capitol Hill during a roundtable discussion about student debt with Sen. Mark Warner and Sen. Tim Kaine. The Science major also received a $5,000 STEM Takes Flight in the Community College Scholarship from the Virginia Space Grant Consortium. She is poised to complete her studies at Thomas Nelson this year.”
